Sustainability strategy

Sustainability is a long-term commitment at Valora

Our sustainability strategy provides the framework for our actions and outlines how we take responsibility. It defines the areas in which we are active, as well as the priorities we focus on in our current sustainability efforts. These priorities are regularly reviewed and further developed as needed.

Materiality analysis

The foundation of our sustainability strategy

To define our sustainability priorities, we conduct a materiality analysis at regular intervals in accordance with recognized standards. In doing so, we systematically assess the impact of our business activities on the environment and society, as well as external developments that may give rise to economic opportunities and risks for Valora. Based on this, we then define our strategic priorities.

In the area of climate, our analysis is additionally based on our 2022 emissions inventory. This enables a data-driven prioritization and a targeted alignment of our emission reduction measures towards those areas with the greatest impact and risk.

Our three action areas

We structure our sustainability strategy around three action areas: People, Planet, and Products.

Within these action areas, we have defined the seven priorities of our current sustainability strategy. They bring together the topics we are currently focusing on in particular and for which we are implementing concrete measures:

CO₂ footprint analysis and emission reduction targets

To better understand and systematically reduce our impact on the climate, we regularly measure our CO₂ footprint

We take into account both direct emissions from our own operations as well as indirect emissions along our value chains, for example in the production of the products we sell or through transportation. Based on this, we derive our priority measures and set ambitious targets to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions:

  • By 2025: 50 % reduction of our Scope 1 and 2 emissions* (already achieved in 2024)
  • By 2030: 50 % reduction of our Scope 3 emissions* through private-label products
  • By 2050: Net-zero reduction of our total emissions (Scope 1, 2, and 3)

We have already reached an important first milestone in reducing our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by sourcing 100% renewable electricity. At the same time, we are aware that indirect emissions along our supply chains represent a long-term challenge in particular. To achieve these targets, we are developing a long-term roadmap.

What do the scopes mean?
The classification of greenhouse gas emissions into Scope 1, 2, and 3 follows the internationally recognised Greenhouse Gas Protocol. It distinguishes between:
  • Scope 1: Direct emissions from owned or controlled sources (e.g., heating systems or company vehicles)

  • Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased energy, such as electricity or district heating
  • Scope 3: Other indirect emissions along the value chain, for example from the production, transport or disposal of products
