Basic commercial training

Basic commercial training

Valora offers basic commercial training in the three profiles B, E and M.

  • Profile B (basic training)
    Job-related subjects: German, economics and society, IT, communications, administration and a foreign language
  • Profile E (extended basic training)
    Job-related subjects: German, economics and society, IT, communications, administration, and two foreign languages
  • Profile M (extended basic training with Federal Vocational Baccalaureate)
    As per Profile E, plus history and algebra

You will do the following

As a commercial apprentice, you will work in six different departments (job rotation) at Valora headquarters in Muttenz (Canton Baselland) over three years. You will learn about the different activities and roles within each professional area through the six-month placements. You will have the opportunity to gain detailed insights into product development, campaign launches and sales outlet management.

The three-year apprenticeship includes extensive business training and prepares you for professional life.

Your training could be structured as follows

Semester 1

Department: Back office
Contents: Processing customer enquiries by telephone and in writing
Duration: Six months

Semester 2

Department: Operator models
Contents: Managing partner businesses (agencies, franchises)
Duration: Six months

Semester 3

Department: Food or non-food category management
Contents: Maintaining article master data, planning product purchases, assisting with product range design
Duration: Six months

Semester 4

Department: Human Resources
Contents: Handling personnel administration, recruitment
Duration: Six months

Semester 5

Department: Marketing
Contents: Handling marketing activities in the sales outlets
Duration: Six months

Semester 6

Department: Supply chain
Contents: Coordinating logistics (deliveries)
Duration: Six months

Your profile

  • Successful completion of primary and secondary school with good to very good grades
  • You have experience in using a keyboard and enjoy computer work
  • Interest in business
  • Independence, reliability, organisational skills and a quick mind
  • You enjoy dealing with people
  • Very good manners and smart appearance
  • Confident delivery in German, any additional foreign language is an advantage

The two retail sectors

The two retail sectors

At Valora, we offer you basic retail training in the Kiosk and food & beverage sectors. You have the opportunity to complete the two-year or three-year professional training and become acquainted with our different sales formats, such as k kiosk, Press & Books and the avec convenience store. You like all the formats? We offer you the opportunity to transfer between different formats and locations during your training.

  • Retail Assistant EBA (2 years, with Federal Certificate of Vocational Education and Training)
  • Retail Professional EFZ (3 years, with Federal Diploma of Vocational Education and Training)

You will do the following

As a retail apprentice, you can experience and learn about customer contact and the dynamic retail business at high frequency locations in our avec, k kiosk and Press & Books sales formats. No two days are the same. Varied tasks and a motivated team await you. Would you like to brighten up our customers’ journey anew every day?

Our two/three-year training offers you the perfect platform to launch your career in sales. We would like to offer all retail apprentices the opportunity of continued employment and career development prospects, for example as deputy managers.

Your training could be structured as follows

Semester 1

Contents: Gaining initial product mix knowledge and knowledge of the premises, structure and organisation, fire, theft and occupational safety drills
Duration: Six months

Semester 2

Contents: Conducting basic sales negotiations and meeting customers’ wishes, ensuring order and cleanliness plus gaining knowledge of the warehouse and till system
Duration: Six months

Semester 3

Contents: Dealing with complaints, independently conducting sales negotiations, consolidating working processes and acting as part of a team
Duration: Six months

Semester 4

Contents: Using operating systems for ordering goods, understanding the product flow, implementing sales promotion measures (incl. display of goods)
Duration: Six months

Semester 5

Contents: Gaining detailed product knowledge, dealing with several customers at once, analysing customer needs and learning about stock management
Duration: Six months

Semester 6

Contents: Conducting advanced sales negotiations incl. arguments relating to prices and products, doing competitor analysis and analysis of operating statistics
Duration: Six months

Your profile

  • Compulsory schooling with good to very good results
  • Flair for retail and an interest in sales and advising customers
  • Resilience and flexibility, team spirit and enjoyment in dealing with people
  • Smart appearance and good manners
  • Confident delivery in German, any additional national language is an advantage
