Fair on the move – BackWerk switches fully to fair trade coffee
BackWerk is expanding its sustainability spectrum and switching to fair trade certified coffee in January 2020. And there's more, the food service bakery is offering all its customers functional reusable cups in all its stores on an unlimited basis for the first time.
BackWerk makes a fair start to the new year: as of January 2020, Germany’s largest food service bakery will only offer fair trade coffee in all its stores in Germany and Austria. BackWerk has developed a special fair trade roast bean with the familiar BackWerk taste in cooperation with Tchibo.
Introduction of a reusable cup
BackWerk is also refining its reusable cup offering: in 2018, BackWerk introduced a high-end limited edition reusable thermal beaker to the market. In response to high demand for the product, BackWerk has now developed a functional and well-priced reusable cup available to all customers on an unlimited basis in every German BackWerk outlet for EUR 1.50.
BackWerk also introduced a new design for disposable cups in January. The cups are made of polyethylene coated paper from sustainable foresting, are PEFC-certified and originate from sustainably managed woods and controlled sources.
Discount for customers who bring a reusable cup
Since September 2018, it has also been standard for customers to take their hot drinks in their own reusable cups in return for a 10 cent discount. Moreover, many stores offer porcelain cups.
Sustainability is a fixed component of Valora’s strategy
As part of Valora, BackWerk is consistently working on expanding its sustainability spectrum: “As one of Germany’s leading snack food providers, we want to make a contribution to sustainable development in our society. As a responsible company, we have set ourselves the goal of bringing our sustainability agenda to the next level and making constant progress,” says Karl Brauckmann, Managing Director of Valora Food Service Germany. Ditsch pretzel bakery that also belongs to Valora introduced fair trade coffee to all its shops last year and is applying reusable solutions to reduce certified materials and organic source products, thus reducing plastic waste.
